Red Sox at New York Yankees

Even though the Yankees are coming off a tough loss they are big favorites in tonight’s home game against their heated rivals Boston.

Boston Red Sox (19-19) at New York Yankees (24-13)

Bovada has a moneyline for this game and has the Yankees posted as the favorite at -200 with the Red Sox at +170 with a run total of 9.

Last week the Red Sox lost two of three at home to the Yankees and in those two losses Boston gave up 24 runs. The Red Sox have to quiet down the bats of the Yankees in this series, which will not be easy since the Bronx Bombers have scored the most runs in the American League this season.

New York lost their last game, is 5-5 in their last 10 games, and is in second place in the tough AL East two games back of Tampa Bay. The Red Sox have lost two straight, are also 5-5 in their last 10 games, and are in fourth place in the division 7.5 games back of Tampa Bay.

This season New York is 12-3 at home and Boston is 7-8 on the road.

Both teams lost in their last games yesterday, as the Yankees lost to the Minnesota Twins 6-1 after closer Mariano Rivera gave up his first grand slam in eight years and the Red Sox lost to the Detroit Tigers 5-1.

Tonight’s nationally televised game is the first between these two teams in New York and last season the Yankees won five of seven games against the Red Sox at home.

Taking the mound tonight for Boston is Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-1 6.35 ERA), who in his last start gave up only one earned run in seven innings in a win. On the hill tonight for the Yankees is Phil Hughes (5-0 1.38 ERA), who in his last start went seven innings and giving up zero earned runs in a win.

Hughes has been great all season, but simply stellar in his last three starts with an ERA of only 0.86. Hughes leads the AL in ERA and opponents’ batting average and he has 39 strikeouts in 39 innings of work.

New York has not lost this season when Hughes has been on the hill and dating back to last season the Red Sox are 5-2 in Matsuzaka’s last seven starts as a road underdog.

The Yankees are chasing the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East and after this two game series with Boston they will host the Rays for two games.

It will be tough for the Red Sox to gain ground in the AL East, as after their two-game series with the Yankees they have three game series with the Philadelphia Phillies and a three game series with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Scheduled to start for the Yankees in tomorrow’s game is CC Sabathia (4-2 3.71 ERA) and Josh Beckett (1-1 7.36 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Red Sox.
