Bumgarner Really Shines With Everything on the Line

It won’t be easy for the Mets and Giants to top the barnburner that was the AL wild-card game last night, but they’ll give it their best shot as they send Madison Bumgarner (15-9, 2.74 ERA) and Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA) to the mound to decide who will face the 103-win Cubs in the NLDS.

SHARK BITES
  • The Mets are 0-5 on both the RL and ML in their last 5 games with a closing total of 6.0 or less.
  • The total has gone OVER in the Giants' last 5 games on the road against the Mets.
  • The Giants are 5-0 in their last 5 games on the road after a loss on the road.

Mad Bum has been handed the task of keeping the Giants’ season alive, as these types of situations have been where the San Fran ace has really earned his keep. In the 2014 postseason, when Bumgarner was named World Series MVP, he compiled a 1.03 ERA and 0.65 WHIP in 52.2 innings pitched and even had the World Series-clinching save. In his two starts against the Mets this season, he owns a 3.27 ERA and 2-0 record.

Noah Syndergaard, alias Thor, has limited playoff experience but he has hurled well enough to earn a 2-1 record in three postseason starts with an ERA of 3.32. Syndy was very effective against the Giants this season and will hope tonight to bring the stuff that, when at its peak, is borderline unhittable.

These teams will be meeting tonight for the eighth time this season, with the boys from the Big Apple owning the 4-3 advantage. As is often said, though, in a one-game playoff, you can pretty much throw stats out the window.
