Is Total Too Low for Mad Max vs Thor?

Max Scherzer and Noah Syndergaard face off in a pitching battle of epic proportions Tuesday. Mad Max and Thor have given up a combined 2.5 runs per outing this season while both are averaging near eight strikeouts per game. It makes sense that the Washington Nationals and New York Mets will be facing a low total for the game – a total that opened at 6.5.

But is a 6.5 too low?

Syndergaard has taken to the mound four times this season with a closing total of 6.5 or less. Thor has surrendered at least two runs in each of those outings and nearly three runs per game on average. Add that to a Mets offense that is competent – though far from great – and the OVER is 3-1 when Syndergaard takes the mound with a total of 6.5 or less this season.

Scherzer has not seen the same number of extremely low totals this season with only his outing against the Phillies at Citizen Bank Park closing at 6.5. Scherzer dominated – pitching seven innings of one-run ball – but the Nats bats notched eight runs.

Neither team is coming in with hot bats though with the Mets averaging 2.3 runs per game during a four-game skid and the Nationals plating just one runner in each of their past two.

Looking at the season as a whole, wagering on low totals has been incredibly inconsistent. Through the first quarter of the season there have been 28 games close with a total of 6.5 or less with the OVER going 15-13.

Two other games on the board Tuesday opened with a total of 6.5 – Giants @ Padres and Angels @ Dodgers.
