Will Tebow Actually Play In The MLB in 2017?

In case you haven’t heard the news, Tim Tebow is playing baseball now. The former Heisman winner changed careers and joined the New York Mets organization in September 2016.

After several months playing with the Columbia Fireflies, the team’s Class A affiliate, Tebow finds himself being promoted to High-A St. Lucie. You are right to ask why Tebow finds himself in line for a promotion considering he was slashing just .220/.311/.648 with 69 strikeouts compared to just 23 walks in Columbia.

Hell, even Mets general manager Sandy Alderson seemed to struggle to find a legitimate baseball-related reason for the move up in the organization. Sorry, Sandy, referencing a player’s OPS at home versus on the road is not a good explanation.

With the Tebow absurdity moving forward every day, we must ask a terrifying question. Are the Mets crazy enough to get Tebow in the show this season?

Making the jump from Low-A ball to the MLB is unheard of, but we all know Tebow isn’t sticking around because of his baseball abilities. The Mets are milking Tebow for all the ticket sales and merch they possibly can, which is fair considering some of the ridiculous things minor league baseball teams do to get attention. However, selling tickets in Columbia is a lot different than filling a roster spot in the majors.

Of course, odds have Tebow not making a plate appearance in 2017 at a hefty -5000. If you think that either there will be roughly 75 tragic accidents that send players within the Mets organization to the DL for the rest of the season or if you believe that Tebow can legitimately become a pro-level baseball player, you can get him to be in the bigs this season at +800.

It wouldn’t be the first Hail Mary we’ve seen Tebow pull off but it would be the most unlikely.
