Music City Bowl Odds Preview

Even though Clemson lost their last two games they played a killer schedule and they have one of the best RB’s in the nation in C.J. Spiller, which is why Music Bowl odds makers have the Tigers as 7.5-point favorites.

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Clemson Tigers -7.5 O/U 52

Time: 8:30 PM EST Sunday December 27, 2009 on ESPN LP Field Nashville Tennessee

Clemson (8-5 7-5 ATS) did drop their last two games, but they did beat then #10 Miami and they were 6-2 in the ACC and won the Atlantic Division. Overall, Clemson was 8-5 and they have won three bowl games in a row. Their solid defense along with Spiller, who was a Doak Walker Award finalist (best RB in the nation), running the ball it is not hard to see why Bovada has them as 7.5 point favorites.

Kentucky (7-5) lost their last game of the season, but had won their previous three. The Wildcats were only 3-5 in SEC play this season and they were 0-3 against ranked teams and those losses were in the beginning of the season to Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina in consecutive weeks.

This season Clemson ranked 69th on offense and 22nd on defense while Kentucky ranked 90th on offense and 59th on defense. These teams each played a tough schedule, as between them they played seven ranked teams this season.

Clemson only has the nation’s 69th ranked offense, but they have Spiller (1,145 yds 11 TD), who averaged an impressive 5.7 yards per carry this season. The Tigers are not one-dimensional on offense, as QB Kyle Parker (2,385 yds 19 TD) can air it out and he has a couple of legit targets in WR Jacoby Ford and TE Michael Palmer, who each averaged at least 11 yards per reception this season. If Spiller has a big game the Tigers will be tough to beat. However, the Wildcats are solid at defending the run, as their rushing defense ranked 22nd in the nation.

Kentucky may have to have a big game running the ball in order to win, as their passing offense only ranked 114th this season. The Wildcats do have a solid rushing attack led by the duo of RB Derrick Locke (843 yds 6 TD) and WR Randall Cobb (537 yds 10 TD). Clemson does have the nation’s 22nd ranked defense, but luckily for the Wildcats the Tigers are much better at defending the pass than the run, where they only rank 69th in the nation. If the Clemson defense can keep Locke and Cobb from moving the chains on the ground they will be in great shape.

Music City Bowl History

In last years’ Music Bowl the Vanderbilt Commodores beat the Boston College Eagles in a close defensive game where there was not many offensive fireworks.

Vanderbilt was underdogs in the game by 5 points so they covered the spread in the upset and the posted total of 40 was not reached.
