Jimmie Johnson is the defending Sprint Cup champion and the early-season favorite to claim a sixth straight series title. He will also most likely be a favorite when the drivers of NASCAR take to the track for the Jeff Byrd 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 20.
Johnson sits in 12th place in the standings after three races, and after finishing 16th in the Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas he is anxious to start moving up the NASCAR ladder.
Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch sit tied atop the leaderboard in the early Sprint Cup Series standings. Kurt has won this race four times, while his brother Kyle Busch has won twice at Bristol. A wager for either brother in the past nine years would have paid off six times over the nine races - some food for thought as you ponder a wager for the upcoming event.
Kevin Harvick is 20th in the current NASCAR standings and would love to repeat his win of 2005 at Tennessee and climb up in the run for the Chase. No other driver sitting within the Top 10 of the Sprint Cup Series standings has won at Bristol in the last decade, aside from current co-leader Kurt Busch, who last claimed the checkered flag in 2006. His brother Kyle - who is 14th in the standings - won the race in 2009.
Jeff Gordon is only in 19th place despite a win at Phoenix - his other two races were not so profitable to bettors with one accident and a lacklustre Daytona 500. He could be a nice dark horse to consider on the NASCAR betting lines for Bristol.
Carl Edwards seems to be the hottest racer at the moment with his victory in the Kobalt Tools 400 last time out, while finishing runner-up to unexpected winner Trevor Bayne at the Daytona 500. He won’t be the favorite, but will be a solid pick with his apparent consistency this year. Edwards is just seven points back of the leaders in the Sprint Cup Series standings.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. could also be a good underdog bet in this race, having a pair of Top 10 finishes in the three races thus far. Ryan Newman and Juan Montoya could get consideration as good underdog bets as well with both drivers having two Top 10 finishes on the season.
