New Faces in New York, but are These the Same Old Knicks?

The Knicks aren’t known as the model of consistency in the NBA, but you have to give them one thing: they’re never boring.

New York has a new look heading into the 2016-17 campaign, and that’s badly needed after last year’s underwhelming 32-50 showing. Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah are in town. Kristaps Porzingis is a future superstar. Courtney Lee and Brandon Jennings provide guard depth. Carmelo Anthony is still one of the league's best players, albeit one who’s on the wrong side of 30.

Health is going to be key for the Knickerbockers this year. Rose’s injury history is well known, and Noah has struggled to stay on the floor in recent seasons as well. Jeff Hornacek was brought in to open up the offense on the sidelines, which is a virtual toss-up considering that he’ll be forced to implement Phil Jackson’s beloved triangle.

The Knicks will be better, but it’s tough to project if it’s going to be a big or mild improvement. For a franchise that hasn’t won a championship since 1973, patience is starting to wear thin in the Big Apple.

Here’s a look at their futures odds courtesy of Bovada:

NBA championship odds +5000

New York currently has the ninth-best odds to cut down the net in the NBA Finals, which may sound a little crazy to some. The Knicks have more depth, experience and talent than they did last year, but New Yorkers can go ahead and forget about title aspirations for the time being. Making the playoffs will be progress for this team, but that’s about the only realistic possibility.

Eastern Conference odds +2500

In the Eastern Conference, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers tower over everyone else. After that, Boston and Toronto are seen as the next group of contenders. When it comes to the next five playoff spots, it’s anyone’s guess at this point. Atlanta, Chicago, Indiana, Detroit, Miami, Milwaukee, Washington and New York will likely duke it out to see the postseason. If any squad other than Cleveland, Toronto or Boston wins the East, it will be a major shock.

Atlantic Division odds +1000

Boston and Toronto’s elevation to the top of the conference is bad news for Knicks backers looking for division value. New York has won the Atlantic just once in the last decade, and it’s unlikely to happen again this season. There’s simply too many obstacles for the Knickerbockers to overcome, and they need to prove they can make the playoffs before even considering them as division contenders.

OVER/UNDER win total 38.5

After last year’s 32-win output, an improvement is expected at Madison Square Garden. Once again, health is going to determine if New York can top 38 victories. If Rose and Noah can stay on the floor, it’s a realistic possibility. If not, it could be another long year in New York. Anthony and Porzingis are great pieces, but they can’t do the heavy lifting by themselves. I’m not sold on this number, so I’m siding with the UNDER here.
