The NBA Draft, a.k.a. the Philadelphia 76ers’ Super Bowl, is set to get underway on June 23, and hoops fans that cheer for underperforming teams are gearing up for the affair. But before we get there, the all-important draft lottery takes place on May 17.

Last year, the Minnesota Timberwolves became the first team since 2004 to win the draft lottery while having the best odds to do so (25 percent). Since the weighted lottery system was introduced in 1990, only four teams with the worst record went on to win while only four squads with the second-worst record have won.

This year the 76ers have the best odds heading into the event, while the Los Angeles Lakers (19.9 percent) and Boston Celtics (15.6) are right on their heels. Boston is selecting in place of the Brooklyn Nets as a result of the extremely lopsided Paul Pierce/Kevin Garnett trade of 2012.

If the Lakers’ choice falls in the top three they will be picking, but Philly gets the pick if it ends up outside of that number. Online sportsbook Sportsbook is giving the Lakers a -145 shot of receiving the pick.

The shop is also offering a special on the Sixers. Ex-Philadelphia general manager Sam Hinkie recently parted ways with the franchise, and the organization is left with a litany of draft picks and losses as a result. Philly’s odds of garnering the No. 1 selection are +250, with No. 2 priced at +275, No. 3 available at +300 and no top three pick at +225.

When it comes to which young gun will be taken first overall, it’s quite clear who oddsmakers are believing in. LSU product Ben Simmons is the -195 fave to go first, with Brandon Ingram (+165) and the field (+1400) also on the board.
