Walton Favored to be Next Knicks Coach

Luke Walton

To put it nicely, the New York Knicks have not been the most consistent franchise in the NBA when it comes to putting a solid product on the floor in recent years. Far from it, in fact. But when the axe fell on ex-head coach Derek Fisher last month, a lucrative position opened up in a market that’s surely going to have no shortage of suitors this offseason.

Kurt Rambis was promoted from assistant to interim coach until the end of the season, but it’s unclear if he’s going to stick around beyond this year. Online book Bovada has released a prop special on who’s going to land the gig with a familiar face topping odds lists.

Golden State Warriors assistant Luke Walton is the odds-on favorite to become the next coach of the Knicks at +300. Walton was handed the reigns in the first half of the 2015-16 season as head coach Steve Kerr recovered from back surgery and didn’t miss a beat for the defending champs, guiding the club to the best start in NBA history.

Walton, 35, is widely perceived as the most attractive coaching option on the market and will very likely be in line for a significant raise this summer.

The almighty triangle lives on

Brian Shaw and Rambis have the next best shot at +400. Shaw has not appeared in the Association since he was relieved of his duties as coach of the Denver Nuggets at the end of the 2014-2015 campaign. Shaw was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers in the late 90s when now Knicks president Phil Jackson roamed the bench, meaning Jackson could once again favor familiarity with his beloved triangle offense in the decision-making process.

Ex-Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau is an intriguing option at +600. Thibodeau is widely believed to be one of the smartest minds in the league, and reports indicate the Knicks’ position is “the job he’s always wanted.” Thibs is a big fan of star player Carmelo Anthony, which is only fuelling speculation he’s on his way to The Big Apple.

Does Coach Cal have a shot?

David Blatt (+600), Scott Brooks (+700) and Mark Jackson (+700) are the other realistic options at the book. For bettors seeking long shot value, Kentucky’s John Calipari is available at +5000, but it’s going to take an awful lot to pry him away from college, and the thought of a Calipari-Jackson combo spearheading basketball operations is a scary proposition.

Who's going to be next full-time coach of the New York Knicks?
