NBA: February's Best & Worst Bets

February was an exciting month in the NBA — Steph Curry broke his own record and the Thunder’s heart, we were wowed by the dunk competition, and Kris Humphries was traded to the Suns… Well, maybe that last one doesn’t quality as exciting, or relevant, or interesting, except for maybe if you still haven’t forgiven him for how things ended with Kim, but I made my peace with the situation long ago, so let’s move on.

There was lots to talk about from a betting perspective too, so let’s get to it. Here’s the best and worst of NBA betting in February:

Best and Worst ATS bets in February

Weird things happen when you’re not looking. While Steph Curry, Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon grabbed the headlines during the month, the Portland Trail Blazers flew under the radar, picking up the league’s top ATS record in the month at 8-3. They played just four road games, but went a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS in those games. They were also a hot bet as an underdog, going 4-0 SU and ATS in that situation as well, which was highlighted by a 137-105 beatdown of the Golden State Warriors on February 19.

February was a bad month to be a Knicks or Kings fan. Well, most months are bad months to be a Knicks or Kings fan, but they put their backers in the red in February as the two worst bets of the month — each covering just three out of 11 games. The Knicks were only able to cover in one of seven home games and went 1-8 SU against other Eastern Conference clubs.

As for the Kings, it was business as usual as the team gave up 110 or more points in eight of their 11 games in the month. The poor defense led the way to a 1-4 road ATS record, and as underdogs they went 1-5 ATS.

  • Trail Blazers 8-3 (72.7%)
  • Lakers 7-3 (70.0%) wins
  • Nets 8-4 (66.7%)

Best OVER/UNDER teams in February

February was a high scoring month for the Dallas Mavericks, as the team posted an almost perfect 9-1 O/U record. Dallas scored 114 or more points five times, and on the defensive end things got pretty ugly as they gave up 110 or more points seven times. Things got especially out of hand on their home court, as their games in Dallas finished with an average total of 221.

On the low scoring end of things, the Clippers cashed the most UNDER tickets in the Association, posting a 2-8-1 O/U record. It was a strong defensive month for the Clips, who held their opponents to 93 or less points on six occasions. On their home court, they went UNDER in all but one of their six games, with the one non-UNDER being a push.

As a whole, it was a good month to bet the OVER, as the league had an overall O/U record of 95-73-3 in February.

  • Timberwolves 9-1-1 (81.8%)

Biggest Upsets

The biggest upsets in February are highlighted by two double-digit dogs coming into the Staples Center and humiliating the Clippers. Well, maybe humiliating is a bit too harsh, but they did beat them. The Clippers new mascot though, now that’s humiliating. Here’s the biggest upsets of the month along with a picture of the Clippers mascot, which was by far the most upsetting thing hoops fans witnessed in February.
