NBA Futures Odds Review
With no games on the NBA schedule tonight it’s a good time to review the latest futures odds and take a quick peek at betting on the upcoming Western Conference Finals.
The latest NBA championship futures odds have gone through a few changes. Before the playoffs tipped off and throughout the postseason the Cavaliers had been the championship favorite at most books. Now that the Cavs are one loss to Boston away from getting the boot, that’s all changed. With Cleveland on the brink of elimination the Orlando Magic have climbed to the top of the odds list at +140 at Bovada.
After sweeping the Atlanta Hawks the Magic get a little rest before facing the winner of Boston vs. Cleveland in the East Finals. Following close behind the Magic on the championship futures are the Lakers at +140 Bovada. The Lakers also have a wait on their hands and don’t begin the Western Conference Finals against Phoenix until next week. The oddsmakers aren’t expecting the Suns to get past the Lakers, which is why Phoenix is a +500 underdog on the championship futures. The opening odds for the Western Conference Finals favor the Lakers at -350, while the Suns are down as +250 underdogs at Bovada. During the regular season Los Angeles was 3-1 versus the Suns, but in the postseason the Suns have won the last two matchups (2006 and 2007). Game 1 goes Monday in Los Angeles, which is one reason why the Lakers are 6.5-point favorites.
Turning back to the NBA title futures, the once heavily-favored Cavaliers finally arrive on the list at +600. That’s not much of a shock, though, after they fell behind the Celtics 3-2. What is strange is that Boston actually has worse odds than Cleveland at +750. Is this the power of LeBron James, giving his team better odds than a team they actually trail in a series? If you believe in the Celtics now is likely the best time to put some money on them at Bovada because their odds will only improve if they knock off the Cavaliers.
