NBA Title Odds Futures
At the league's unofficial midway point the Miami Heat are still the betting favorite to win the NBA title, but they don't sport the best record in the league.
Heading into Wednesday night's action the Heat owned a 40-15 record and they topped the NBA futures at Bovada at +200. That's pretty good for LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and company, but it doesn't live up to the lofty expectations they set for themselves before the season began. Anything but a 55-0 record at this point wouldn't live up to the Heat's preseason boasting, though.
While the Heat have looked good so far this season, the best record in the NBA currently belongs to the San Antonio Spurs at 46-9. That includes an amazing 25-2 record at home. Despite their great record the Spurs are fourth on the NBA futures list at Bovada at +450. Not only are they behind the Heat, but they also fall below the Lakers (+300) and Boston (+400). Looking ahead to the second half, circle March 4 on your calendar because that's the first game of the season between Miami and San Antonio.
The Celtics and Lakers faced off for the NBA title in last year's Finals and they could both easily get back there again this season. The Celtics are arguably the team to beat in the Eastern Conference ahead of the Heat because they are 3-0 both SU and ATS against Miami this season. In fact, the Celtics are 9-1 SU in their last 10 versus Miami and 8-2 ATS.
The Lakers' chances at a three-peat will likely depend on if they can wake up in time for the postseason. Los Angeles hasn't been their dominant selves for most of the season so far and in their last 13 games as the favorite they're only 6-7 SU.
For the NBA betting crowd the Spurs have also been the most valuable team through the first half. Not only are the Spurs the top team in the league SU, but they also boast an impressive 34-19-2 record ATS. It's even more impressive when you compare it to the rest of the NBA's elite. The Heat are .500 ATS at 27-27-1, the Celtics are a lackluster 25-26-2 ATS, and the Lakers are the worst at 25-31 ATS.
Who is the best ATS after the Spurs? Would you believe the Memphis Grizzlies at 35-21-1? Other surprisingly good teams ATS include Philadelphia (34-20-1) and New York (32-19-2).
