Oklahoma City Thunder Have Become an Under Bettors' Dream

The NBA season is still young, but the Oklahoma City Thunder have already raised a lot of eyebrows across the Association in the wake of a 6-1 start. Totals bettors are loving the Thunder for a different reason, though.

As of Wednesday, OKC ranked as the best UNDER team in the NBA at 1-6 O/U. Books opened the total for their home matchup with the Toronto Raptors at 202.

If it stays at that number, it would mark the lowest total the Thunder have seen so far. The average OVER/UNDER Russell Westbrook and company have faced is 211.

So, how have they done it? It’s a combination of fantastic defense and a lack of secondary scoring. Oklahoma City ranks seventh in the league in points allowed (97.9), fourth in opponent field goal percentage (42.1 percent), first in opponent 3-point percentage (27.9 percent) and sixth in steals (9.4).

Russell Westbrook is putting up some eye-popping numbers (30.4 points, 9.9 assists and 8.4 rebounds per game), but it’s quite clear OKC lacks the one-two punch it once had with Kevin Durant. Victor Oladipo (15.7 points), Enes Kanter (12.4) and Steven Adams (10.3) have helped fill the void, yet it hasn’t been enough to go OVER totals.

The Thunder are averaging 102 points per game, and that’s likely to dip if Westbrook’s torrid pace slowly tapers off. The dynamic point guard is logging 33.1 minutes per night while using 41 percent of his team’s plays, per NBA.com.

The highest single-season usage rate in NBA history is 38.7, which was set by the legendary Kobe Bryant in 2005-06. That’s a heavy burden for Westbrook to carry, and the physical toll it’s taking will likely catch up to him sooner rather than later.
