Big East Betting Odds Preview
The Georgetown Hoyas haven’t won the Big East title since 2007, but they are still the most recent team to do so of the remaining members of the Big East. With Louisville, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Notre Dame moving on to other conferences in conference re-alignment, the totem pole at the top is wide open.
Georgetown (+200 to win the Big East at 5Dimes) returns plenty of talent with Markel Starks and Jabril Trawick in the back court and Mikael Hopkins and Nate Lubick up front. The loss of Otto Porter to the NBA and Greg Whittington to injury have tempered expectations a bit in Georgetown, but the Hoyas have the depth to stay near the top of the conference all season long.
Should Georgetown falter, many are expecting the Marquette Golden Eagles (+250 to win the Big East at 5Dimes) to be the team to take advantage. Overshadowed by some of the big programs previously dominating the conference, Marquette has won at least 22 games for five years running and at least one NCAA Tournament game in four of those seasons. Despite losing three starters, Marquette has enough returning talent and a strong recruiting class to take its place atop the new Big East.
The Creighton Bluejays (+250) join the Big East after dominating in the Missouri Valley. Doug McDermott and Grant Gibbs return to lead an offense that has ranked in the top 10 nationally in each of the last two seasons. With an offense that can shoot out with anyone, Creighton will undoubtedly be competitive in Big East play, but will likely need to improve on defense to wear the conference crown.
Optimism is high around the Villanova Wildcats (+500) this season. The team returns four starters from last year’s NCAA Tournament team and also brings in a nice recruiting class as well. Villanova proved it could play with anyone last season with January wins over Louisville and Syracuse, and will look for that level of play more consistently this season.
