Butler vs Syracuse Odds Preview
The No.1 Syracuse Orange have looked dominant in their run through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Can they keep it going in the Sweet 16 against their toughest test so far, the No. 5 Butler Bulldogs, a team bettors seem to like as the line has been bet from -7.5 to -6 at Bovada and other sportsbooks?
The Syracuse Orange lived up to their No. 1 seeding so far with routs of Vermont and Gonzaga. The Catamounts were a walk in the park for the Orange in a 79-56 win as 15.5-point odds favorite at Bovada.
They sent Gonzaga packing just as easily with an 87-65 win as 6.5-point odds favorites. Wesley Johnson exploded for a season-high 31 points along with 14 rebounds while shooting 11-of-16 in the rout of the Bulldogs.
Making the Syracuse early tournament run even more impressive is that they’ve done it without Arinze Onuaku. The senior forward hasn’t even taken to the hardwood in practice since injuring his leg in the Big East Tournament. Onuaku started 31 of the 32 games he played this season and averaged 10.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

The Butler Bulldogs enter the Sweet 16 riding the longest winning streak in the country at 22 games. They began the tournament with an easy 77-59 win over No. 12 UTEP as a 2.5-point odds favorite. It wasn’t quite as easy in the second round when they faced No.13 Murray State.
The Racers had just upset Vanderbilt and nearly did the same to the Bulldogs before Butler pulled out a 54-52 win as 4.5-point odds favorites at Bovada. Ronald Nored led Butler with 15 points and Gordon Hayward delivered 12 points as well as a key defensive stop late in the game when the Racers were looking for the winning shot.
It’s been awhile since Syracuse and Butler last met. That was back in March 2002, but not in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange and the Bulldogs clashed in the second round of the NIT and Syracuse won 66-65 as a 2-point odds favorite. In Thursday’s matchup the latest Sweet 16 odds have the Orange down as a 6-point odds favorite at Bovada.
For Butler this is their third Sweet 16 berth in their last five tournament appearances. They’ll be hoping for a better ending, though, as their last two Sweet 16 games both ended in defeat.
The Orange made it to the Sweet 16 in last year’s March Madness; they failed to advance to the Elite Eight after losing to Oklahoma.
