Gonzaga: Mightiest Cinderella Ever?

It’s only the Sweet 16 but already the Gonzaga Bulldogs have made history.

This season’s Gonzaga team marks the first time a double digit seed has been favored in its first three games of the NCAA tournament in at least 20 years, which is as far back as our database goes. (It’s a safe assumption that also means the first time ever.)

The Bulldogs opened minus-4.5 against Syracuse for Friday’s game after being set as 1-point faves over Utah in the second round and 2-point faves over Seton Hall in the first round.

Not only that, but the Zags were the first double digit seed to ever be favored in even their first two games of the tournament. Just let that sink in a sec.

Before you go spewing venom at the NCAA tournament committee for their shoddy seeding, consider this is the same Gonzaga that needed to win the West Coast Conference tournament to ensure itself a spot in the NCAA tournament.

They got hot at the right time and now they are getting fitted for glass slippers.

Not a Cinderella you say? That depends who you ask. NCAA.com views a Cinderella as a team seeded ninth or higher in its region and one that also advances to the Elite Eight. That leaves only the Zags and Syracuse (a No. 10 seed) left as teams that could qualify in 2016.

If it does happen to be Gonzaga, we just might be looking at the mightiest Cinderella - or at least one of the loudest barking underdogs - we’ve ever seen.

Surprisingly, futures value still exists with the Zags with them sitting at 18-1 at Bovada to win the tournament. They opened as high as 80-1 at some sports books.
