Tuesday’s Big East Tournament

On Tuesday the Big East begins its playoff tournament at Madison Square Garden. There are plenty of angles for bettors to exploit in the opening round, even if the eight schools taking the court aren’t likely to make it to the Big Dance.

(16) DePaul vs. (9) South Florida

DePaul (8-22 SU, 14-11-1 ATS) looks to play spoiler when it takes on South Florida (19-11 SU, 19-8-2 ATS) to kick off the Big East tourney. The lowly Blue Demons put up a good fight in their 63-59 loss to the Bulls last Tuesday at Allstate Arena, but it wasn’t enough to get the cover. Dominique Jones went for 20 points and seven rebounds in the win for South Florida, which went into the game as 3-point favorites at Bovada.

(13) St. John’s vs. (12) Connecticut

In an unfamiliar position near the bottom of the Big East standings, Connecticut (17-14 SU, 12-17 ATS) needs to get its act together in a hurry if it’s going to make a run this week. St. John’s (18-11 SU, 8-15 ATS) is the first hurdle for the Huskies, who fell 75-68 at South Florida (+1.5) on Saturday for their third straight loss both SU and against the number.

(15) Providence vs. (10) Seton Hall

Expect a sky-high total when Seton Hall (18-11 SU, 8-15 ATS) clashes with Providence (12-18 SU, 10-15-1 ATS). Both schools rank in the top 12 nationally in points per game, with the Friars coming into the contest ranked sixth at 81.6 PPG. The Pirates have an outside chance of getting to the Dance if they have a good showing at MSG this week, so handicap them to bring some added motivation to the floor.

(14) Rutgers vs. (11) Cincinnati

By far the worst wager in the Big East, Cincinnati (16-14 SU, 7-18 ATS) should be faded for its battle with Rutgers (15-16 SU, 12-14 ATS). As bad as is the Bearcats’ overall ATS record, it doesn’t tell you the whole story. Cincinnati’s embarrassing 74-47 defeat at Georgetown (-7) on Saturday dropped it to 3-13 ATS (6-11 SU) in its last 17 games.
