Though we are early in the college basketball season, a clash of two powerhouses takes center stage as Villanova and Purdue square off Monday. Purdue enters the contest as the underdog against the reigning national champs, a spot bettors should pay attention to, as the team is 17-5 ATS in its past 22 as underdogs.
Purdue opened the season by destroying McNeese State 109-65 and it was (predictably) the Caleb Swanigan show. Swanigan had 23 points, 20 rebounds and six assists in that outing, which made him just the third D-I player in the past 10 years to post 20 points, 20 rebounds and five assists in a single game. The entire Purdue backcourt was deadly in that game as Swanigan, Isaac Haas and Vince Edwards combined for 64 points and 37 rebounds.
Villanova started the season in a romp with an 88-48 win over Lafayette. Jalen Brunson led the Wildcats’ attack, as the sophomore put up 17 points and seven rebounds while shooting 6-for-9 from the floor. Keep an eye on the guard trio of Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges, as ’Nova likely has the advantage in the backcourt.
