Stanford Has Many Holes To Fill On Offense

Stanford had an absolutely phenomenal year last season, but a lot of things are going to need to go right for the Cardinal to replicate that success. Luckily, Stanford plays in the relatively weak Pac-12 and has the most versatile running back in the nation on their team.

2016 National Championship Odds

Stanford opened at +2500 to win the national championship this upcoming season, which is the 10th-best odds. If the Cardinal were to manage to become the last team standing it would be the first time the team won the national championship since 1926.

A two-loss season almost certainly means Stanford won’t be making the postseason and a couple losses look very realistic. Stanford has very manageable home games, but their road schedule features trips to UCLA, Notre Dame and Oregon.

The game versus Oregon will be specifically important to Stanford, as it was the Ducks that beat them last year to dash their playoff hopes.

Pac-12 Championship Odds

Odds for the Pac-12 championship reflect just how much of a toss-up this conference is with five teams listed between +300 and +600. However, either Stanford or Oregon has claimed the Pac-12 title in each of the past seven seasons.

If Stanford wants to make a real run at the Pac-12 title – let alone the national title – they will need to quickly rebuild their offense. The team will be looking to replace four-year starting quarterback Kevin Hogan as well as three offensive linemen who went to the NFL through the draft.

Season Win Total

Stanford has a rather pedestrian win total of 8.0 (-150/+120) heading into the 2016 season. Though a regression could be expected with many new faces on the team, keep in mind just how successful coach David Shaw has been.

Since taking over for Jim Harbaugh ahead of the 2011 season, Shaw has led the Cardinal to a 54-14 record with four seasons of 11-plus victories.

Most Important Player: Christian McCaffrey

McCaffrey will succeed despite whatever else is going on with this offense. Whoever is under center will use McCaffrey as a security blanket. The right side of the line is intact from last season so McCaffrey will still have a steady hole to hit in the running game. Simply put, McCaffrey may be more important to his team than any other player in the country.
