The Sugar Bowl is a part of college football’s New Year’s Six, and the second-oldest bowl game, along with the Sun and Orange bowls. The first Sugar Bowl kicked off on January 1, 1935 in New Orleans, Louisiana, after nearly a decade of pressure from a community sports publisher and a local editor.

The Sugar Bowl was initially played at Tulane Stadium, and ever since, it became the host to the Southeast Conference champion and their respected competitor for that season. From 1950 to 1995, there was only one occurrence when an SEC team did not play in the Sugar Bowl. More recently, in 2012, Michigan and Virginia Tech played the first Sugar Bowl since the Second World War without an SEC team in attendance.

In 2012, there was intention to create a new bowl game between the Big 12 and SEC, but it was decided that the Sugar Bowl would play host to that matchup, starting in 2015. However, the 2015 game was the Sugar Bowl’s turn to host a semifinal bowl game, so they had to delay that launch until 2016. Ole Miss and Oklahoma State were the first teams to play in the Sugar Bowl under these new rules, with Ole Miss defeating Oklahoma State 48-20. In the case that the top SEC team goes to the semifinal in one of the other five bowls, the second highest-ranked SEC team will play in the Sugar Bowl.

Alabama holds the record for Sugar Bowl attendance, at 15 appearances and eight wins, while LSU is not far behind with 13 appearances and six wins, followed by Ole Miss with nine appearances and six wins. They also select an outstanding player for the Miller-Digby Award, which has been a Sugar Bowl tradition since 1948, and has been awarded to football greats like Dan Marino, Bo Jackson and, more recently, rising stars like Teddy Bridgewater and Ezekiel Elliott.
