Best road bets in college football

Lines are up, and college football is three weeks away.

Let’s continue the OddsShark college football betting primer with a look at which coaches and teams have been the biggest road warriors against the spread.

(2006-2011 road ATS records from OddsShark.com’s database. Check out the best home bets right here).

Ball State Cardinals: 28-9 ATS (75.67%)
Ball State? The Cardinals aren’t exactly the first team that comes to mind when thinking of road juggernaut, but that’s exactly what they’ve been, at least against the spread.

Straight-up, Ball State is 21-19 on the road since 2006, but somehow has found ways to keep games closer than the betting market expects.

Ball State has covered the spread in 17 of its last 22 road games as an underdog, including a 4-2 ATS performance on the road in coach Pete Lembo’s first season.

Picked to be one the MAC’s dregs, the Cardinals will be catching considerable points at Clemson (Sept. 8) and at Indiana (Sept. 15).

Ohio State Buckeyes 20-8 (71.42%)
This is all about Jim Tressel, who capped off is prolific Buckeye career by covering 16 in his last 23 road games with one push.
Will Urban Meyer be able to keep up the pace? He was only 10-10 ATS on the road in his five seasons at Florida.

Alabama Crimson Tide 18-8 (69.23%)
It’s no real shocker that the best program in the land right now doesn’t miss a beat when it heads on the road. Saban is 14-8 ATS on the road in his first five seasons in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide has been favored in 13 straight road games and in 40 of 41 games overall.

Oklahoma State Cowboys 21-10-1 ATS (67.74%)
Mike Gundy went 1-4 straight-up on the road in his first season in Stillwater. He’s been covering ever since. The Cowboys are on a remarkable 13-2 ATS road run over the last three season, highlighted by an 8-1-1 mark as a road favorite.

Gundy heads into his eighth season with a freshman quarterback in Wes Lunt at the helm of what has developed into one of the most explosive offensive systems in the nation. The Pokes get a break in their road schedule by getting Texas, TCU and West Virginia at home.

Traveling down I-35 to Norman on Thanksgiving with a freshman QB to meet the revenge-minded Sooners doesn’t seem like the best spot to back the Cowboys, though.

Bowling Green Falcons 27-13 ATS (67.5%)
The second MAC squad to make the list, the Falcons are expected to contend for the conference title and a bowl berth in coach Dave Clawson’s fourth season. Bowling Green has been a solid road bet under Clawson, going 11-8 ATS.
