Heart of Dallas Bowl Matchup

Following five straight losing seasons, including a 2-10 effort last year, Army is back in a bowl. The Black Knights started 3-0 this season, with a win over eventual AAC champion Temple. They then lost five of their next seven games, putting that good start in jeopardy. But Army then beat Morgan State 60-6 to become bowl-eligible.

With a rivalry battle with Navy yet to be played, the Knights were 6-5 ATS on the season, 4-3 ATS when favored. But they were only 3-5 ATS over their last eight games, losing three times outright as favorites over that span, including as 18-point favorites against the Mean Green. Army outplayed North Texas that day but turned the ball over seven times.

UNT improved from 1-11 to 5-7 in its first season under new head coach Seth Littrell, “earning” a bowl appearance after missing out the last two seasons. The Mean Green started 2-3, then won two straight, including that 35-18 upset of Army up at West Point, to crawl above .500. But North Texas then lost four of its last five games, and only made a bowl because there's so darn many of them.

The Mean Green also started 5-1-1 ATS this season, then finished 1-4 ATS. But they're also 5-4-1 ATS as underdogs.

Army, while playing what Sagarin at USAToday.com rates as the 137th-toughest schedule in the country this year, ranks second in the nation in rushing at 329 YPG. The Black Knights also rank fifth in total defense, holding opponents to just 290 YPG, and 21st against the run, allowing just 126 YPG.

Meanwhile, playing the 111th-rated schedule, North Texas ranks 118th in offense at 336 YPG and 79th in total defense at 432 YPG. And that offense could be slowed even more if quarterback Mason Fine, who missed the last two games with an arm injury, isn't ready to go for the bowl.
