Oklahoma Favorites To Win Big 12 Crown, Yet Again

The road to the Big 12 conference title has run through Norman for the better part of a decade. Oklahoma has won the Big 12 in seven of the past 10 seasons, which includes four of the past five. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Sooners are listed as +110 favorites to win the conference crown in 2017.

All the optimism is thanks to Heisman finalist Baker Mayfield. The gunslinger has been one of the best quarterbacks in the nation the past two seasons, as the former walk-on has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for 7665 passing yards the past two seasons while tossing 76 touchdowns compared with 15 interceptions. The rest of the offense is a question mark with Dede Westbrook, Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine all gone.

Oklahoma State has the second-best odds, entering the season at +425. Mason Rudolph-to-James Washington is one of the best combos in the nation, as the quarterback and wide receiver pairing absolutely torched opposing defenses last season. However, Oklahoma State has only beaten Oklahoma once in the past five seasons. That will need to change if the Cowboys are going to win the Big 12.

The biggest mystery is Kansas State. The Wildcats went 6-3 in conference play last season while blowing out lesser teams and getting beaten up by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The offense should be even better this year with the safe Jesse Ertz under center behind a line that returns four starters. The defense has holes all over the place, though, something that should be a concern.

The Oklahoma Sooners are the runaway favorites to hoist the Big 12 Championship for the second straight season in 2016. Oklahoma is returning the bulk of a roster that made it all the way to the Orange Bowl last season – including star quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The Sooners are listed at -125 to win the Big 12 at Bovada with no other team posting odds better than +500.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys and TCU Horned Frogs are both coming in at +650 and +500 respectively. Both Oklahoma State and TCU finished last season at 7-2 – just one game behind OU.

The Cowboys will have Mason Rudolph under center once again after he completed 62.3 percent of his passes with a 21-to-9 TD/INT ratio last season. No.1 wide receiver James Washington – who averaged an absurd 20.5 yards per catch – is also back with the team.

The challenge for TCU is going to be replacing Trevone Boykin after the four-year starting quarterback graduated. Kenny Hill – who made waves with Texas A&M in 2014 – transferred to TCU and will be eligible to play. Hill showed he has the potential to be a top-flight quarterback in the Big 12, but was replaced midseason last year by freshman Kyle Allen.
