Will Herman Be The Longhorns’ Next Coach?

Charlie Strong is out in Austin. Yes, Texas has not officially fired coach Strong, but there are reports locally in Austin and nationally that suggest that the decision has already been made.

With plenty of Longhorns fans gleefully waiting for the official confirmation of Strong’s departure (yes, we are an awful people), it’s time for many to start looking forward to who will lead the team into the future. Multiple reports out of Austin are that Texas boosters are pushing extremely hard for the team to hire Tom Herman, now head coach of the Houston Cougars.

Herman started the season as a hot coaching candidate but hit a new high with a Houston win over Louisville. Herman has spent the bulk of his coaching career in Texas except for his stints as offensive co-ordinator with Iowa State and Ohio State.

There will be other schools in the market for Herman’s services, of course, but they will be hard pressed to outspend Texas. With his connection to the team (Herman was part of the Longhorns staff during the 1999-2000 season) and Texas having the money to pay, Herman being the head coach of the Longhorns next season opened at -300.

One interesting team to keep an eye on in all of this will be Texas A&M. It seems as though coach Kevin Sumlin may be on the outs in College Station, and the Aggies could also be gunning for Herman hard if that’s the case.
