New Orleans Bowl Matchup

Coming off a disappointing 4-8 SU and 5-7 ATS campaign in 2015, Louisiana-Lafayette looked like it might fail to reach bowl eligibility for the second straight season after falling to 3-5 SU and 4-4 ATS with a loss as a 4.5-point home favorite to Idaho. Instead, the Ragin' Cajuns caught fire down the stretch with a 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS run that included upset wins over Georgia Southern and Arkansas State.

Louisiana-Lafayette's final win of the season against Louisiana-Monroe on December 3 brought the team's record to 7-2 SU and ATS in the month of December. The Ragin' Cajuns leaned heavily on their defense in the 30-3 win over their rivals, getting two touchdowns via fumble recovery returns on a day in which quarterback Anthony Jennings threw only five passes. One was incomplete, two were caught for no gain and two were intercepted.

After starting the 2016 season off with a 4-1 SU and 2-3 ATS record, Southern Miss dropped five of its next six games and went 0-6 ATS over that stretch. The losing streak included a loss to UTSA as a 16.5-point favorite and to Charlotte as a 17.5-point favorite. Remarkably, going off as a 15-point underdog at home in their final game of the regular season against Louisiana Tech, the Eagles snapped out of their slump with a 39-24 win.

These two teams have met six times in the last 20 years, and over that span this series has heavily favored the Eagles. Southern Miss is a perfect 6-0 SU and ATS in its last six games against Louisiana-Lafayette and has won every game over that stretch by at least 25 points. The average margin of victory for the Eagles in their last six games against the Ragin' Cajuns is 38 points.

History favors the Eagles in the New Orleans Bowl, but momentum at the end of the regular season favors Louisiana-Lafayette. The only sure thing heading into this bowl matchup is that the Ragin' Cajuns will have a clear-cut home-field advantage.
