Northern Illinois Betting Odds Preview

It’s been quite a run for the Huskies behind quarterback Jordan Lynch and their dynamic offense. Last year Northern Illinois ran the table in the regular season going undefeated,. However, they failed to record their third straight MAC Championship after an upset loss to Bowling Green in the title game. They also were upset in the Poinsettia Bowl, losing to Utah State 21-14. Now the hard part is keeping it up without Lynch.

With Lynch behind centre last season the Huskies had the top scoring offense in the MAC, averaging 39.6 points per game, and top offense overall, averaging 519.8 yards per game. Lynch finished third in Heisman voting last year after passing for 2892 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushing for a conference-high 1920 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Northern Illinois Odds to Win MAC: +275 at 5Dimes
Northern Illinois Odds to Win College Football Championship: +80000 at 5Dimes

With Lynch and running back Cameron Stingily leading the way Northern Illinois was a force on the ground with the top running game in the MAC at 297.2 yards per game. Altogether that was 4161 rushing yards on the season, which was 1400 yards more than any other team in the conference.

The transition to a new QB will be made a little easier with Stingily still around, but it could get off to a bumpy start with Stingily expected to miss at least the first four games due to an undisclosed injury. There are plenty of other skill players on offense including RB Akeem Daniels, and wideouts Tommylee Lewis and Da’Ron Brown, so don’t count out the Huskies just yet.

The Huskies’ schedule could also keep them near the top of the MAC. The only tough games on tap are road games at Northwestern, Arkansas and Ball State, but their inter-conference schedule looks like a walk in the park with only three games against teams coming off winning seasons and three games against teams that had three wins or less last season.

The Huskies were road warriors for bettors last season with a near-perfect 6-1 ATS record. Too bad they were the opposite at home at 2-5 ATS.
