St. Petersburg Bowl Matchup

Miami-Ohio had three outright upsets over the course of its hot streak at the end of the season, including a 28-15 road win over Eastern Michigan as a 7-point underdog. At the center of the Redhawks' sharp turnaround was sophomore quarterback Gus Ragland. Ragland missed the first six games of the season with a torn ACL injury he'd suffered in the spring, but he made an immediate impact upon his return.

The sophomore threw 15 touchdown passes and no interceptions in his six games of action this season. The offense averaged 29.8 points per game with Ragland under center compared with just 16.4 points per game with backup quarterback Billy Bahl. Miami-Ohio is a completely different team with their primary signal-caller healthy, as is clearly indicated by its record with and without him.

Despite finishing the season with just a 5-7 SU and ATS record, the Bulldogs received a bowl invite due to their scores in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate. Mississippi State crushed Ole Miss 55-20 in the Egg Bowl as a 10-point road underdog to pick up the necessary fifth win in its final game of the season. It was the Bulldogs' second win of the year as a double-digit underdog, with the other coming against Texas A&M.

Like Miami-Ohio, Mississippi State has plenty to be excited about at quarterback moving forward. While there were some growing pains in replacing Dak Prescott, Nick Fitzgerald played quite well. The sophomore passed for 2,287 yards and 21 touchdowns this season while leading the team in rushing with 1,243 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. Mississippi State averaged 31.5 points per game during the regular season.

The main reason for Mississippi State's struggles this season was the defense. After allowing 23.3 or fewer points per game in each of their last six seasons, the Bulldogs fell to 97th in scoring defense this year, allowing 33.1 points per game.
