Tom Herman Perfect Against Ranked Teams

Tom Herman is seen as the savior for the Texas Longhorns. The offensive wunderkind came to Austin this past offseason after spending two wildly successful years with Houston. There is still work to be done for the Longhorns program, but Herman brings with him an unparalleled track record of success against the top competition.

During his two seasons as head coach in Houston, Herman went a perfect 6-0 SU against ranked opponents. It’s not like the Cougars were beating fringe Top 25 teams either — there were victories against Oklahoma, Florida State and Louisville in that span.

What’s even more impressive, all four games that saw the Herman-led Cougars close as an underdog, the team won with an average scoring margin of plus-17.8 points.

This weekend’s game will easily be Herman’s biggest test, though, as Texas faces off against No. 4-ranked USC. The Trojans have an elite quarterback-running back duo in Sam Darnold and Ronald Jones. Through only two games, USC is 11th in the country in points per game (45.5) and ninth in yards per game (572). Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando will need to work their butts off to fix a defense that struggled mightily against Maryland in their season opener.

Herman has embraced the role as the underdog during his career as a head coach. But there is something about Herman. A special something that seems to get the best out of his players when the lights shine the brightest. So, maybe you shouldn’t doubt Herman despite what the odds might say.
