NFL Week 17 line moves

Lines were moving fast and furious in the final week of the NFL season, especially if you bet at some books where lines opened much lower than where they currently stand.

There were line moves all over the league during the week, but there were three specifically that caught our eye. All three saw the line change by at least 2 points.

We’ll start with New England at Houston. This game doesn’t have much meaning for the Patriots, but the Texans must win to keep their playoff chances alive.

That’s likely why the game opened with the hometown Texans as a 6-point favorite at Bovada. Take a look at the game now and you’ll find that Houston has grown to an 8-point chalk.

The two-point move is somewhat surprising because Pats coach Bill Belichick refused to answer how long his starters would play this week. His vague response as to whether starters like Tom Brady and Randy Moss would play at all was “I would expect they’d be there.”

Bettors must have taken that to mean they won’t play much to bet the Texans so heavily to force a two-point line adjustment.

The second game that caught our eye was Cincinnati at the Jets. Depending where you get your lines from, this game opened anywhere from -7 to -9 in favor of the Jets. The current line at Bovada has the Jets down as a 10-point chalk.

Bettors have the same problem in this game as they do in the Pats-Texans contest. The Jets must-win, while the Bengals are in the post season win or lose. Marvin Lewis has said that his starters will play, but bettors still has hit the Jets with enough money to get the line moving.

Rounding out or three-pack of games is Washington at San Diego. This game also opened all over the place with the Chargers down as an 8-point favorite at some books and a 6-point chalk at other. Right now over at Bovada San Diego is listed as a 4-point favorite.

Norv Turner said his players will start as normal, but anyone expecting them to play the entire game is kidding themselves. No wonder the Chargers line has slipped so much and could continue to fall up to game time on Sunday.
