Is Cam Newton a Big Game QB?

Carolina Panthers Cam Newton

Everyone knows Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton boasts an abundance of talent, but how does he stack up when the stakes are at their highest? We at OddsShark decided to dive into how the signal-caller has performed in big game situations ahead of the biggest matchup of his life, Super Bowl 50.

Since 2015, Newton has participated in five NFL playoff games in which the Panthers have gone 3-2. In that span, the 26-year-old has amassed eight touchdowns, six interceptions to go along with a passer rating of 92.0 and a completion percentage of 63.3. The Georgia native, one of the best running QBs in the league, rushed for two touchdowns and 176 yards on the ground in those games.

In the 2010 BCS Championship Game, Newton’s Auburn Tigers edged out the Oregon Ducks by a score of 22-19 en-route to claiming the college football crown. Newton finished the contest with 265 passing yards, two TDs, one interception and 64 rushing yards.

Confidence has never been an issue for the polarizing Newton, as many fans and pundits around the league have voiced their displeasure with his on-field celebrations. But Cam’s mantra has always been simple: if you don’t want him to celebrate, stop him.

Numbers never lie, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Newton stepped up in a big way on February 7 and carried his Panthers to their first ever Super Bowl title. Squaring off against one of the best quarterbacks of all time presents an excellent storyline for talking heads on television, but it seems like a safe bet to believe it’s Cam Newton’s time to shine.
