Colts lead NFL line moves

The move was sudden, but predictable.

Peyton Manning would not play in Week 1 against the Houston Texans so the point spread would move quickly off the -2 number set by oddsmakers.

What wasn’t predictable was the size of the move, all the way to -9.5 at some sportsbooks such as BetOnline. So on the eve of the 2011 season, one of the league’s premier franchises was a 9.5-road underdog against a divisional foe. And one that might not even have its best player (Arian Foster) available for the game.

The 7-point NFL line move in the Colts Texans point spread was the biggest jump of the week but wasn't the only one. [ The biggest sportsbook bonus to start the season is at Bovada - double your deposit up to $250! ]

Cleveland -3 to -7 at home to Cincinnati

The Browns opened as 3-point home chalk against the Bengals, but bettors pushed the Browns all the way to -7. It’s strange given Cleveland’s inability to cover spreads in season openers (1-8-1 ATS past 10 years) and an unusual 4-point line move. [ ATS Preview ]

Arizona -3 to -8 at home to Carolina

An even bigger move is going on in the desert where the shine has come off the Cam Newton Will Save Us campaign among bettors. The Cardinals opened as 3-point chalk, but bettors are pounding the line and forcing it to -8 (and possibly higher). [ ATS Preview ]

Detroit +3 to EVEN at Tampa Bay

Maybe it’s that impressive 4-0 preseason, maybe it's the promise of ‘we’ll get ‘em next year’ that rings each September in Detroit, or maybe it’s the fact the Lions are 7-1 ATS in their past 8 games against Tampa Bay. Whatever the reason, the 3-point line move in the Cardinals vs Panthers spread is the biggest for any road team in Week 1.

40.5 to 37.5 on the Tennessee-Jacksonville total

David Garrard was dismissed, and Tennessee has a tailback who skipped the preseason and an aging Matt Hasselbeck running a new offense. Does this spell offensive struggles? It seems to be, at least to over under bettors on the Jaguars Titans total line. The 3.5 move on the total is the biggest of the week for over under bettors.
