Denver Broncos 2012-2013 Season Odds

It was quite a season in Denver last year and an even bigger offseason. Despite a 1-4 start the Broncos got red-hot at exactly the right time as the Chargers choked, allowing Denver to steal away the division with an 8-8 record.

Odds to win AFC West: +180
Regular Season Win total: 9 (Over -120)
Props: NFL MVP Odds Peyton Manning 10/1

Tim Tebow helping the Broncos make the playoffs and upset the Steelers in first round wasn't enough to keep him in Denver. After the season the Broncos jettisoned Tebow's legs for Peyton Manning's experienced arm.

Manning's arrival in Denver will likely mean a big change for the Broncos offense. Last season Denver had the 31st (152.1 yards per game) ranked passing attack and the No. 1 (164.5 yards per game) rushing attack in the league. With the addition of Manning the Broncos will likely revert to a more pass-friendly offense. Manning has reportedly already developed a report with wide receiver Eric Decker and deep threat Demeryius Thomas could also be in for a big season. Manning also has a familiar target in Denver in former Colts tight end Jacob Tamme.

The Broncos running game won't be completely abandoned though just because Tebow's gone. Willis McGahee had his best season in four years, rushing for 1199 yards in 15 games. McGahee will begin the season as the starter, but he could have competition if Knowshon Moreno eventually returns from a knee injury.

The Denver defense had some big games last season, but overall they weren't that good, ranking 20th in yards allowed (357.8 yards per game) and 24th in points allowed (24.4 points allowed per game). Von Miller was a beast in his rookie campaign and Champ Bailey is still one of the top corners in the league, but Denver will be without tackle D.J. Williams machine for the first six games due to a drug suspension.

Denver Broncos 2011-2012 Season Odds Preview

Last year, there weren’t many positives to Denver’s season. They finished tied with Buffalo and Cincinnati for the AFC’s worst record at 4-12, and had big problems on both sides of the ball; especially on defense.

One of the big focal points of this season was supposed to be the transitioning into the Tim Tebow era at quarterback, but that has been put on hold for at least the time being with Kyle Orton retaining the job during spring camp. So the focus seems to be on winning now; even if wins may be hard to come by.

Odds to Win AFC West: +1000
Regular Season Win Total: Over 5.5 (-155)
Props: Defensive ROY Odds Von Miller 5/1

Kyle Orton actually had a strong year last year, passing for 3,653 yards and 20 touchdowns (to nine interceptions) in 13 games. Orton is undoubtedly a better quarterback than Tim Tebow right now; but considering this team is in rebuilding mode, many fans are confused as to why the Broncos aren’t letting Tebow go through the growing pains with the team.

If the Broncos fall out of contention, Tebow will likely take over late in the season as he did last year.

Knowshon Moreno will start at running back, and Willis McGahee was brought in to replace Correll Buckhalter as his backup.

No team in the NFL did more poorly on defense last season than the Broncos, who finished dead last in total defense (390.8 yards per game) and scoring defense (29.4 points per game).

Denver drafted linebacker Von Miller with the second overall pick, and hope he can step in and make an immediate impact. Miller was a standout at Texas A&M, racking up 27.5 sacks in his two seasons there. Denver also used their second-round pick on a defensive player, UCLA Safety Rahim Moore.

With a defense that won’t be fixed overnight and an underwhelming offense around him, Kyle Orton isn’t likely going to be able to do much more than he did last year. Miller is good enough to make an immediate impact, but Denver has some catching up to do in the AFC West.
