NFC West Season Odds Preview

No division in the NFL is more wide open than the NFC West.

The division sunk to a new low last season when every team in the division finished with a losing record, allowing the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks to win the division and earn a playoff berth. Any of these teams have the potential to get to eight wins, and that could be all it takes.

St. Louis Rams (Odds to Win Division at Bovada +160)

Sam Bradford stepped right on to the NFL stage with a strong season last year, winning offensive rookie of the year honors with his 3,512 yard and 18 touchdown campaign.

With Bradford to build around, St. Louis went out and reloaded the offense this season. They brought in running backs Carnell Williams and Jerious Norwood to back up Steven Jackson, and signed wideout Mike Sims-Walker along with two other wide receiver draft picks. The Rams are still a work in progress, but easily have one of the division’s best offenses on paper.

San Francisco 49ers (Odds to Win Division at Bovada +200)

After being picked to run away with the NFC West last season, San Francisco had a very disappointing season, finishing 6-10 after an 0-5 start.

New coach Jim Harbaugh is a great coach and game manager, and should be able to get the most out of his roster. But with the departure of Takeo Spikes on defense and Frank Gore threatening to hold out, there are obstacles Harbaugh must overcome. The biggest will be to get some consistency out of quarterback Alex Smith.

Arizona Cardinals (Odds to Win Division at Bovada +210)

Arizona lost a lot of talent this offseason in running backs Tim Hightower and rookie Ryan Williams (injury), wide receiver Steve Breaston, and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

But all the focus is on the man Rodgers-Cromartie was traded for, former Philadelphia quarterback Kevin Kolb. In Kolb, Arizona feels they have a franchise quarterback and a guy that can bring their passing game back to respectability. Arizona managed five wins with one of the NFL’s worst offenses last season, so Kolb could help get that win total up.

Seattle Seahawks (Odds to Win Division at Bovada +600)

It’s not too often you see a team win a division and beat the defending Super Bowl Champions in the playoffs only to be the longest shot on the board to win the division the following season, but here Seattle stands.

The Seahawks added some good pieces this offseason, including wide receiver Sidney Rice, tight end Zach Miller, and guard Robert Gallary. The issue is at quarterback, where Tarvaris Jackson is starting over Charlie Whitehurst; neither instill much fear into opposing defenses.
