NFL Betting: The Midseason Report
We’re halfway through the 2013 National Football League season, and the Dallas Cowboys own the best record against the spread at 7-2. Meanwhile, the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars are both 1-7 ATS heading into Week 10 of the season.
Here are some of the other NFL betting storylines from the first half of the season.
Broncos have been going OVER
With Peyton Manning launching touchdown after touchdown, all eight of the Broncos’ games have gone OVER the posted total. Games involving the Broncos have averaged more than 70 points so far this season.
St. Louis Rams games also have been higher scoring than expected, with seven of nine going OVER the total.
The undefeated and defensive-minded Kansas City Chiefs have kept seven of their nine games UNDER the total.
Have the Seahawks peaked?
Seattle’s incredible run against the spread has subsided. The Seahawks had covered the spread in 10 of 11 games dating back to December, but they have not been able to cover big numbers as of late. Seattle has failed to cover in four of its last five games overall, including three times as double-digit favorites.
NFL home teams are on a roll
Home teams only went 6-7 against the number last week, but still reached the end of the first half of the season with a strong record against the spread. The hosts are an impressive 72-58-3 against the spread, with home favorites covering at a 56.25 percent clip so far.
Bolstered by the home teams, favorites own a 69-61-3 record against the spread heading into Week 10. The San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, and New Orleans Saints have covered the spread in each of their home games. AFC East teams are a combined 14-5 ATS at home.
NFL Betting - Week in Review
Not all underdogs covered, but the most crucial dogs for books definitely took care of business last week. The result was one of the best NFL weeks of the season for sportsbooks.
Underdogs covered seven of 13 games in Week 9, with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears pulling off straight-up upsets. The Jets’ win over the New Orleans Saints was huge for Bovada, and the Bears’ Monday night upset of the Green Bay Packers was icing on the cake.
There were eight OVERs, four UNDERs, and one PUSH in the Thursday night game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins won that game on a safety in overtime, making the final score 22-20. Most books were offering the total at 42.
