NFL Betting: Week 3 Line Moves
The giant pointspread highlighting this week’s NFL betting card has shrunk.
The Seattle Seahawks opened as 16.5-point favorites over the visiting and winless Jacksonville Jaguars. The line grew to as high as -20 earlier in the week, but was coming back down on Friday. 5Dimes had the impressive Seahawks giving -18.5; Bovada had -19, and TopBet was sitting at 19.5 as of Friday afternoon.
Regardless, it’s one of the largest spreads ever in the NFL. But that doesn’t mean the Seahawks aren’t capable of covering it. Seattle has covered the spread in 16 of its last 20 home games. Jacksonville has yet to score a touchdown this season and is 3-17 straight-up and 9-11 against the spread in its last 20 games as an underdog.
Cleveland Browns at Minnesota Vikings
A quarterback change and massive trade prompted this line to grow four points. The Vikings opened as 3-point favorites, but that was before Browns starting QB Brandon Weeden was ruled out with a sprained thumb. Then, Cleveland traded running back Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a first-round draft pick. When the dust settled, the Vikings were 7-point favorites against a team that has clearly started planning for the future … in Week 3.
NY Giants at Carolina Panthers
A battle of two winless teams, the New York Giants vs. Carolina Panthers game also features a pointspread on the move. The Panthers opened as 2.5-point home favorites, but the line had gone over the fence as of Friday, leaving the Giants as 1-point favorites. 5Dimes had the game as a pick ‘em. Carolina is 6-14 straight-up and 9-11 against the spread in its last 20 games as a home underdog.
The Giants are off to a dreadful start, with quarterback Eli Manning throwing seven interceptions in losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos. They’ll be looking to turn it around on the road, where they’ve failed to cover the spread in their last five away games.
Other line movement:
Detroit at Washington: Winless Washington opened as a 2.5-point favorite, but the line had shrunk down to a pick ‘em as of Friday.
Green Bay at Cincinnati: The visiting Packers have gone from 1.5-point underdogs to 3-point favorites over a Cincinnati team coming off a short week.
