NFL Line Moves on Favorites

Betting favorites this season has been like putting money in the shredding machine, but bettors aren’t shying away from some heavy favorites to create significant Week 6 NFL line moves.

Underdogs have dominated the board for three straight weeks, but is this be the week that NFL favorites finally come to play?

Two favorites have had their line move by a full point this week and remain steady; the San Diego Chargers starting at -7.5 and moving to -8.5 on the road against the St. Louis Rams, and the New York Giants starting at -8.0 and moving a full two points to -10.0 at home against Detroit.

Both games are tough to read. San Diego got red-hot at this point last season, finishing their season with 11 straight wins after starting off 2-3, as they did this season. But this season the Chargers are 0-2 ATS and SU on the road; can they be trusted to cover such a big spread? Bettors seem to think so.

New York is in top form, coming off two straight double-digit wins over Chicago and Houston. They are clearly capable of winning and covering when playing at this level, but I still lean towards the Lions.

Getting 10 points on a team that is 4-1 ATS and coming off a blowout win of their own is hard to pass up on, especially with the way underdogs have been playing lately.

Both the Pittsburgh Steelers’ and the New Orleans Saints’ lines also moved a full point earlier this week, but have since moved a full point back to their original line.

Pittsburgh opened at -13.0 at home over Cleveland, and excitement over Ben Roethlisberger’s return likely helped fuel the line’s movement to -14.0. But two touchdowns in a division rivalry game was enticing enough for underdog bettors to move the line back to -13.0. Even if you missed the boat at 14 points, +13.0 is still a pretty large number for a Cleveland team that hasn’t lost by more than 10 points this year.

New Orleans opened at -4.0 on the road against Tampa Bay, moved up to -5.0 from early-week action, and has since moved back to -4.0. Considering the Saints are 0-5 ATS this season, it is no surprise to see bettors taking the points on 3-1 ATS and SU Tampa Bay.

Despite Jay Cutler’s return for Chicago, bettors are still taking the points on Seattle, moving the line from Chicago -7.0 to -6.5. Less surprisingly, bettors are also taking the points on Oakland against 0-5 San Francisco, who opened at -7.0 and are now -6.5 as well.

Bettors seem willing to look past Houston for last week’s blowout loss, moving their line from -4.0 to -4.5 at home over Kansas City.
