NFL Opening Betting Lines: Week 17
The status of two key starting quarterbacks had the NFL betting world’s full attention as spreads for Week 17 of the season began showing up at sportsbooks this week.
Dallas Cowboys starter Tony Romo will reportedly miss Sunday’s crucial game against the Philadelphia Eagles with back issues. The Eagles, who opened as 2-point road favorites, are now 7.5-point favorites over the Cowboys, who likely will be quarterbacked by journeyman Kyle Orton.
Multiple reports surfaced Monday that Romo was out for the season, but Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett refused to acknowledge that Romo had been ruled out for Sunday’s game. Most believe that Garrett was just using gamesmanship, however.
Dallas won the first meeting between the two division rivals in a low-scoring, 17-3, game in Philadelphia. The winner earns the NFC East title and advances to the playoffs.

In Green Bay, the focus was on Packers starter Aaron Rodgers and his healing collarbone. Rodgers is considered questionable for Sunday’s elimination game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field; Rodgers injured his collarbone in an early November loss to the Bears. He’s missed the last seven weeks, but is getting closer each week. Most pundits believed early in the week that Rodgers would not play against the Bears, but books were being cautious and had not posted a line on the game as of Tuesday morning. Matt Flynn will QB the Packers if Rodgers can’t go.
The winner earns the NFC North title and advances to the playoffs.
Six of the 16 Week 17 games feature double-digit point spreads as playoff implications are plentiful across the league. The Indianapolis Colts are 13-point favorites over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Seattle Seahawks are 10-point favorites over the St. Louis Rams. The San Diego Chargers are 11-point favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs, who are already locked into their playoff spot. The Denver Broncos are 12-point favorites over the Oakland Raiders. The New Orleans Saints are 13.5-point favorites over Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
