NFL Opening Betting Lines: Week 6
NFL Week 6 features the largest point spread in history and also some significant early line movements, starting with the Thursday night game in Chicago.
The Bears opened as 3-point favorites over the Giants, but the line had surged to as high as Bears -9 (-120) at Bovada as of Tuesday afternoon. Both teams’ seasons could be on the line in this battle of desperate teams. New York is 0-5 and struggling mightily, while the Bears have lost two straight.
The Cincinnati Bengals-Buffalo Bills line also has seen dramatic movement, mainly caused by the Bills’ quarterback situation. The Bengals opened as 3-point road favorites, but the line was up to -8 at TopBet as of Tuesday afternoon. Rookie E.J. Manuel injured his knee last week against the Cleveland Browns and will miss Sunday’s home game. The Bills have been trying out several quarterbacks off the street, but former Duke quarterback Thad Lewis is expected to start against a nasty Bengals defense that held Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to just six points last week.
The surprising New York Jets have gone from home underdogs to small favorites against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jets knocked off the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night and are now 1-point favorites over the winless Steelers. Pittsburgh opened as a 2.5-point favorite.
The betting love for the Kansas City Chiefs continues. The Chiefs opened as 7.5-point home favorites over the Oakland Raiders, but that line had grown to -9.5 as of Tuesday afternoon. The Raiders are coming off an impressive win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night. But few teams have been more impressive than the undefeated Chiefs, under first-year coach Andy Reid.
In the marquee afternoon game, the New Orleans Saints are attracting early action against the host New England Patriots. The Patriots opened as 3-point favorites, but the line has been bet down to -1 at some shops as of Tuesday.
The Monday night game between the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers also has seen significant line movement. The Colts, who opened as 3-point road dogs, are now 1-point favorites at some shops.
And, of course, the line everyone is bubbling about is Denver -27.5 against Jacksonville. It’s one of the largest of all time and will be interesting to follow to see which side bettors take throughout the week. 5Dimes was already down to 26.5, so apparently there are a few bettors not afraid to back the winless Jaguars.
