The NFL preseason kicks off on Sunday with plenty of betting storylines. Andy Reid may be the biggest.
How will the longtime Eagles coach handle his first preseason in Kansas City?
For the majority of Reid’s tenure in Philadelphia, the Eagles were a losing bet in the preseason. But with Reid’s job security dwindling, the Eagles went 7-1 straight-up and 6-2 against the spread in the last two preseasons.
Despite that strong finish, Reid ended his career in Philly at 25-31 straight-up and 25-28-1 against the spread in preseason games.
Now, he takes over a Chiefs team on a remarkably bad run against the spread in the preseason. Kansas City is 5-28-1 ATS over the past eight preseasons.
While Reid’s teams have been up and down in the preseason, Mike Shanahan’s teams have consistently beaten the betting market’s expectations. Shanahan enters his third season with the Washington Redskins with his No. 1 priority keeping quarterback Robert Griffin healthy. Shanahan is 42-32-2 against the spread in preseason games with 63 percent (48/28 over/under) of his exhibitions going OVER the total.
Pete Carroll is another coach to pay attention to in the preseason. The Seattle Seahawks frontman enters the season with the best record against the spread in preseason games (19-9 ATS) among all current coaches. He’s 8-4 ATS in the preseason with the Seahawks.
Under coach Gary Kubiak, the Houston Texans’ preseason games have trended to the OVER. In fact, 20 of the Texans’ 28 games under Kubiak have gone OVER the total.
Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin also have produced high percentages of preseason OVER results at 45-28 and 42-27 respectively.
Underdogs went 8-7-1 ATS in Preseason Week 1 last year. There were seven OVERs, eight UNDERs, and one push.
Robert Griffin III is not expected to play in the Redskins’ preseason, while recovering from a knee injury. Griffin says he’s ready to go, but Shanahan doesn’t want to risk him.
The Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins open preseason play in the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday. The Cowboys are 1.5-point favorites as of Monday with the total sitting at 34. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is questionable for the game.
