Football is just around the corner. Are you ready? With NFL training camps opening up next week, it’s time for handicappers to kick in and start preparing for the season. Let’s look at some of the teams that have consistently gotten off to hot starts to the season and a few that haven’t.
San Francisco 49ers: In his first two seasons, coach Jim Harbaugh has had his team primed for the start of the season. The 49ers are 5-1-1 against the spread in September. Maintaining that level of success this September, however, will not be easy. The 49ers open against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, before traveling to Seattle for an NFC West battle with the Seahawks in Week 2. San Francisco then rounds out the month with a home game against Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts and a Thursday night road test at the St. Louis Rams.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Bucs have covered the spread in five of their last six games in September. They went 3-1 ATS last September in coach Greg Schiano’s first season. Schiano had a habit of getting his teams at Rutgers off to hot starts as well. Overall, Tampa Bay is 13-7 against the spread in its last 20 September games, the best such ATS mark in the league. The UNDER is 10-1 in the Bucs’ last 11 September games.

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins have been dreadful in September. They are just 4-16 straight-up and 5-13-2 against the spread in September over the last six seasons. They are 2-7-1 against the spread in their last 10 season openers, a trend they’ll try to buck when they travel to Cleveland for this year’s opener.
St. Louis Rams: Coach Jeff Fisher always had his teams in Tennessee ready for the start of the season. However, the Rams have been a different story. St. Louis is 3-17 straight-up and 6-14 against the spread in September since 2007. The Rams are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 home openers. They host the Arizona Cardinals this season.
