NFL Thanksgiving Day Betting Primer

The traditional NFL Thanksgiving tripleheader is a day football and food fanatics look forward to all season. Unfortunately, the games tend to get more out of hand than a group of strangers fighting over a discounted toilet seat at a Home Depot Black Friday sale. Since 2000, 28 of the 42 games have been decided by double digits with the games having an average win margin of 15.88. Last year’s games, for example, were pure trash with two of the games being decided by 19 points or more while the Bears and Packers put us to sleep early with a 17-13 snoozer.

Lack of competitiveness aside, there’s money to be made for bettors and we’re here to help. Keep that trend of big win margins in mind on Thursday with two of the games having spreads of seven points or more. You also might be inclined to side with the favorites, as they’ve posted a very profitable 23-10 ATS record on Thanksgiving over the last 11 years.

If you’re still on the fence, here’s the most important trends and stats along with our traditional gold nuggets for each of this year’s Thanksgiving games:

Vikings at Lions
  • The Vikings have held the Lions to under 20 points in five of their last six games.
  • The Lions are averaging just 56.2 rushing yards per game over their last three games — second-worst in NFL.
  • On the road, the Vikings are averaging a league-worst 64 rushing yards per game.
  • In their last seven games as underdogs vs the Lions, the Vikings are 6-1 ATS.
  • The Vikings are 21-8 SU in their last 29 games against the Lions.
  • The Vikings are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against the Lions.
  • The total has gone UNDER in five of the Vikings' last six games against the Lions.
  • The Lions are 4-1 ATS in their last five games on Thursday.
  • The total has gone UNDER in six of the Vikings' last eight games on the road.
  • The Vikings are 2-8 SU in their last 10 games on the road against teams with winning records.

Redskins at Cowboys
  • The Cowboys will try to become the first team since the 1992 Chargers to cover the spread in 10 consecutive regular season games.
  • Over their last three games, the Cowboys are averaging 32.3 points per games — second-best in the NFL. The Redskins are averaging 31.7 points per game over their last three — fourth-best in the NFL.
  • The Redskins are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 games against the Cowboys.
  • The total has gone OVER in three of the Redskins' last four games against the Cowboys.
  • The Redskins are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games in Dallas, but are 6-18 SU in their last 24 games there.
  • The Redskins are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog. This includes a 5-0 SU and ATS record as a road underdog.
  • The Cowboys are 5-14 ATS in their last 19 games as a favorite of 7.0 or more.
  • The Cowboys are 3-7 SU in their last 10 games against teams with winning records.
  • The total has gone OVER in five of the Cowboys' last six games as home favorites.
  • The total has gone OVER in 13 of the Redskins' last 15 games.
  • The Redskins are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games on the road after consecutive home games.
  • *Fantasy Alert* Jamison Crowder has scored a TD in three straight games and has scored a TD in four straight games vs NFC East opponents.
