NFL Week 17 Betting Primer

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is traditionally great for mailing it in. I certainly mailed it in during the few days that I had off during the holidays — I barely moved and treated my body like a dumpster by filling it with beer and junk food. But now I’m back at it and ready to take on the bookie for one last time this regular season.

I bet many of you are mailing it in right now. Some of you are probably reading this at work while your unsuspecting boss is also mailing it in and most likely looking at pornography on their computer. With all this mailing it in going on, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that some NFL teams slack off in the last game of the season, while others put their foot on the gas and finish the season strong.

Here’s some Week 17-specific trends you should be aware of before placing your bets:

  • Over the last three seasons, road teams are 28-19-1 ATS in Week 17.
  • The Patriots are 14-4 ATS in their last 18 games in Week 17.
  • The Cardinals are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games in Week 17.
  • The Steelers are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games in Week 17.
  • The total has gone OVER in 10 of the Chargers' last 11 games in Week 17.
  • The Bills are 4-10 SU in their last 14 games in Week 17.
  • The Cowboys are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games in Week 17.
  • The Vikings are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in their last five games in Week 17.
  • The Rams are 0-10 SU in their last 10 games in Week 17.
  • The Colts are 7-17 ATS in their last 24 games in Week 17.
  • The Jaguars are 1-10 SU and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games in Week 17.
  • The Saints are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 games in Week 17.

Should you be basing bets solely off the trends above? Absolutely not, but different teams have different philosophies for the last game of the season and the numbers above might be helpful to differentiate between who mails it in and who finishes strong.

  • The Bears are 2-13 SU in their last 15 games on the road.
Saints at Buccaneers
  • The total has gone UNDER in five of the Saints' last six games against the Buccaneers. The average combined score in those games was 41.8.
  • The Saints rank first in the NFL in net yards per play this season. The Bucs rank 25th.
  • The Saints are 10-2 SU in their last 12 games against the Buccaneers.
  • The Saints are 3-1 ATS in their last four games against the Buccaneers.
  • The total has gone UNDER in eight of the last nine games between these teams in Tampa Bay.
  • The Buccaneers are 0-9 SU in their last nine games as underdog.
  • The Buccaneers are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games at home in December.
  • The total has gone UNDER in five of the Buccaneers' last six games vs divisional opponents.
  • The Saints are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games vs divisional opponents.
