NFL Week 2 Sunday Games News & Notes

The New England Patriots lost their opener last week, while the Minnesota Vikings won their Week 1 contest. However, with Adrian Peterson declared out for Sunday afternoon the Vikings are sitting as even bigger underdogs at home for their game against the Patriots at 1pm ET at TCF Bank Stadium.

Tom Brady and company were giving up just over a field goal at most sportsbooks on the opening NFL odds for Week 2, but once Peterson was made inactive that line grew to New England -5.5 by Friday night and New England -7 at some sportsbooks by Saturday. Peterson's status going forward for Minnesota remains up in the air.

New England, which obviously lost its last game of the season in the playoffs last year, has not lost three in a row since 2002 - when it managed to lose four straight. The Patriots have been a middling wager after a loss recently, going 4-4 ATS in their last eight games in that situation.

Matchup Reports: Patriots vs. Vikings | Seahawks vs. Chargers | Bears vs. Niners

The other seven 1pm ET games for Sunday are Miami vs. Buffalo, Atlanta vs. Cincinnati, New Orleans vs. Cleveland, Arizona vs. the Giants, Dallas vs. Tennessee, Jacksonville vs. Washington, and Detroit vs. Carolina. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (ribs) is listed as probable for this week and is fully expected to start.

The five games starting later on Sunday afternoon are then Kansas City at Denver, the Jets at Green Bay, Houston at Oakland, St. Louis at Tampa Bay, and Seattle at San Diego. The Chargers are home underdogs against the defending-champ Seahawks, by as much as +6 at some sportsbooks; San Diego is 4-1 ATS in their last five home games as underdogs of 6 points or more.

On Sunday night the Niners then host the Bears, with Chicago going 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games in which they've been listed as an underdog of a touchdown or more. However, Bears wide receivers Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) and Brandon Marshall (ankle) are both listed as Questionable for Sunday and could be game-time decisions.
