NFL Week 7 Quarterback Props: Is Geno Smith The Answer?

The quarterback carousel is in full swing. The New York Jets (wisely) benched the train wreck that was Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of Geno Smith. Landry Jones will be getting his first start of the year, as Ben Roethlisberger will be out at least four weeks to recover from knee surgery. And Brock Osweiler continues to get the start in Houston despite posting numbers that I could replicate in the NFL.

With that in mind, here are some quarterback-related props that offer some intrigue this week.

Geno Smith Has To Be Better than Ryan Fitzpatrick. Right?

Geno Smith has not started a game since then teammate IK Enemkpali fractured his jaw in a locker-room brawl. Since then, Smith has made three appearances in the NFL with plenty of mediocrity. Throughout his underwhelming career, Geno has averaged 185.7 passing yards per game. That is a far cry from the 199.5 total that books have his number set at for this weekend.

Geno and the Jets will also be facing off against the Baltimore Ravens in New York this Sunday. The Ravens passing defense has been average this season, as they rank 13th in passing yards allowed.

Landry Jones Has The Pieces To Succeed

The Pittsburgh Steelers have all the weapons for any quarterback to succeed in their offense. Landry Jones should be in a good position come Sunday, but he struggled in his lone career start for Pittsburgh. Jones went 16-for-29 for 209 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions on November 11, 2015 against the Cleveland Browns.

Yeah, Jones threw two picks against the Browns.

Add into that, the Steelers are playing the New England Patriots in Week 7. That means there is a high likelihood that Tom Brady goes off and Jones needs to start slinging the ball. Landry is consistent and steady, but how successful will he be when he needs to put the team on his back?

Brock Osweiler Just Keeps Sucking

I’ll admit it: I was a believer in Brock Osweiler. Lord, was I wrong.

The Houston Texans “franchise quarterback” has a 74.1 passer rating with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has weapons in DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller and Lamar Miller. But Osweiler keeps failing to produce.

To make matters worse, the Texans play the Denver Broncos – who have the fifth-best passing defense and the most sacks in the NFL.
