Nover: Niners Tomsula Dealt a Bad Hand

Few first-year NFL head coaches have been dealt a worse opening hand than Jim Tomsula at San Francisco.

Not only is Tomsula replacing the wildly successful Jim Harbaugh, who left the team in turmoil, but he's had to deal with a shocking number of departures via retirement, free agency, trade, or being kicked off the team in the case of star pass rusher Aldon Smith.

The 49ers might have played their game of the year opening week when they defeated Minnesota as a short home underdog. Since then San Francisco has failed to win, or cover, its past three games being outscored, 107-28.

Defensively the 49ers can't generate enough of a pass rush, linebacker NaVorro Bowman hasn't looked good since coming back from serious knee surgery and the safety play has been disappointing.

quarterback Kaepernick's star has faded

But the worst curveball Tomsula has been thrown is the continued regression of Colin Kaepernick.

Just three years ago, Kaepernick was an emerging star on the cusp of greatness. Now he ranks with Brandon Weeden, Ryan Mallet, Michael Vick and Kirk Cousins as among the five worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL.

No quarterback has played as badly as Kaepernick during the past two weeks. He has a 0-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a quarterback rating of 25.6 during the last two games. The 49ers have managed only one touchdown in their last 23 drives.

Kaepernick's terrible play is eroding what little morale remains left on this charred team.

Niners Back in Action vs giants on Sunday

The 49ers and Kaepernick are going to be on full display as the road team against the New York Giants Sunday night. The Giants are seven point favorites.

San Francisco management is forced to play Kaepernick after signing him to a six-year $115 million contract. The 49ers have one of the weakest backup quarterbacks, Blaine Gabbert.

Defenses have long caught on to San Francisco's simplistic zone-based run offense and Kaepernick being more of a runner/thrower than accurate passer.

The 49ers lack the brain trust to turn around Kaepernick. Tomsula is a defensive guy. Offensive coordinator Geep Chryst last was an NFL coordinator in 2000 with San Diego. Quarterback coach Steve Logan coached running backs at Tampa Bay before coming to the 49ers this year.

Harbaugh took the fall for last season's disappointing 8-8 year. Now it's general manager Trent Baalke's turn to take blame. It's on his watch there has been upheaval, misplaced faith in Kaepernick and three straight years of bad drafts.
