Odds on Kaepernick being a member of 49ers in Week 1

Colin Kaepernick

Preseason is typically a time for teams to sort out their depth charts, fantasy players to debate their rankings, and for Cowboys fans to throw away their money on a Super Bowl futures bet, but 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick got people talking when he refused to stand for the national anthem during a game on Friday vs the Packers.

When asked why he didn’t take part in the pregame tradition he said, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

A storm of controversy ensued and the debate rages on. Kaepernick detractors are calling his stance a distraction, while some want to see him cut or traded. With the controversy still front and center in the headlines, online sportsbook Bovada has opened odds on if Kaep will be on the 49ers roster when they suit up for Week 1. ‘Yes’ is listed as the likely outcome at -160, while ‘No’ is at +120.

After taking over as the full-time starter in 2012 and appearing to be the franchise QB for years to come, the Nevada alum has shown significant regression and started in just eight games last season. It appears as if he’s lost out on the starting gig to Blaine Gabbert, which shows how far Kaepernick has deteriorated considering Gabbert’s career passer rating of 71.9.

If Kaepernick stays in the news for the wrong reasons, San Francisco might choose to cut ties with the man they signed to a six-year deal just two years ago.

Will Colin Kaepernick be a member of the 49ers in Week 1?

Odds as of August 30 at Bovada

  • YES -160
  • NO +120
