Steelers looking to lay the smack down vs Colts

Head coach Chuck Pagano gets to keep his job for another week. That may be the only sliver of hope for the Indianapolis Colts after they snuck past the depleted Houston Texans in Week 9. What Indianapolis may find out in Week 10, though, is the Pittsburgh Steelers are not the Texans. The Colts opened as double-digit dogs at home and will be in tough to take down Steel City, 6-2 SU this season and aiming for a fourth straight win.

SHARK BITES
  • Pittsburgh is 14-2 SU in its last 16 games against Indianapolis.
  • The Colts are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games as home underdogs.
  • Le’Veon Bell leads the NFL with 194 carries.

While the Steelers have been known to drop some games to subpar competition (ahem ... Bears and Jaguars), they’ve come through when it’s mattered. Pittsburgh is 4-1 SU on the road this season and has shown what they’re capable of when they allow running back Le’Veon Bell to dominate the offensive snaps. In Pittsburgh losses, Bell only manages 15 rushing attempts whereas in Pittsburgh wins this season, he averages a bruising 27 carries per game. Obviously, the Steelers will try to limit Bell’s carries so he can be fresh for a playoff run but for now, expect a full serving of the running back against the Colts, who allow just under 114 rush yards per game.

The only saving grace for Colts backers is the Steelers haven’t been a strong bet to cover in this situation. Going back to 1993, the Steelers are 1-10 ATS as a double-digit favorite on the road. And coincidentally, the last time the Colts were a double-digit dog at home, it was against the Steelers in 2011. Also, in Colts losses this season, they’ve lost by an average of 18 points in six games.

The total opened at 44 and the UNDER may need some serious consideration. The total has gone UNDER in seven of the Steelers’ last eight games with those games averaging 37.25 points. The Colts, on the other hand, only average 18 points per game this season and the UNDER has hit in seven of their last nine games at home. One final alarming stat is that the last 10 games the Steelers have been double-digit faves, the UNDER has hit in all 10.
