Rams Favored vs Seahawks For First Time In Six Years

The NFC West seems to be on the verge of a renaissance. After years of being dominated by the Seattle Seahawks, and to a lesser degree the Arizona Cardinals, the division is seeing some fresh new blood in a competitive Los Angeles Rams team.

The Rams, who are led by 31-year-old head coach Sean McVay, have the top scoring offense in the NFL and lead the NFC West with a 3-1 record. McVay has rejuvenated the careers of Todd Gurley and Jared Goff, making the Rams front office look like geniuses for drafting the young backfield duo.

On the flip side, the Seahawks have been struggling this season. The ’Hawks are 0-2 on the road, are dealing with injuries all over the field and the offensive line is arguably the worst in the NFL. That’s not to say the Seahawks have not flashed their ability – look at the second half vs the Indianapolis Colts last week – but continued lapses have been hurting them a lot.

Taking all that into consideration, the Rams are currently 1.5-point favorites when they welcome the Seahawks to LA this Sunday. If that seems rare, that’s because it is. The Rams have not closed as a fave against the Seahawks since November 20, 2011.

Remember November 2011? Newly formed One Direction released their first album, the Twilight franchise was going strong with Breaking Dawn Part 1 topping the box office and America’s “It” couple – Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries – were still legally wed.

Needless to say, it’s been a minute.

Going further back, the Rams have only been favored over the Seahawks seven times since 1985, a span of 35 games. Keep in mind that the Seahawks didn’t join the NFC until 2002, so meetings between the two teams through the ’80s and ’90s were quite rare. Since the NFL realigned in 2002, putting the Seahawks and Rams in the NFC West, LA/St. Louis has been favored over Seattle five times – going just 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS.

Maybe this time will be different. There is certainly an air of optimism around the Rams that the team hasn’t had in well over a decade. But the Seahawks have proven to be “the man” in the NFC West. And as Ric Flair says: “To be the man, you gotta beat the man.”
