San Francisco 49ers 2012-2013 Season Odds
The long rebuild in San Francisco finally came to fruition last season as the 49ers finished 13-3 to win the NFC West and make the playoffs for the first time in nine years. San Francisco came oh so close to getting back to the Super Bowl too, losing to the Giants in overtime in the NFC Championship game.
Odds to win NFC West: -200
Regular Season Win Total: 10 (Over +110)
Props: NFL MVP Odds Alex Smith 35/1
A big part of the 49ers climb up the ladder last year was their defense. San Francisco had the No. 2 scoring defense in the league last season, allowing only 14.3 point per game and they were the No. 4 unit overall, after allowing 308.2 yards per game.
Led by linebacker Patrick Willis the 49ers defense has a number of underrated defenders that broke out in a big way last season. This includes tackle-leader Navorro Bowman, Aldon Smith, who had 14 sacks and Justin Smith and Ahmad Brooks who combined to take down the quarterback 14.5 times.
Not only did the 49ers boast a ferocious pass rush, they were also the top defense in the league against the run. The 49ers defense allowed only 77.3 rushing yards per game and only three rushing touchdowns all season, by far the best in the league.
If the 49ers offense could match their defense they could be unstoppable. Alex Smith had a pretty good last year by his standards, but he's still a question mark. Smith passed for 3144 yards with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions and the 49ers added Randy Moss and Mario Manningham alongside Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis to give Smith more options in the passing game.
San Francisco also went to free agency to try and improve their run game and take some pressure off Frank Gore. He rushed for 1211 yards on 282 carries last season, but could lose some playing time to Brandon Jacobs and rookie LeMichael James this season.
The 49ers are easily the class of the NFC West this season and they could be the team to beat in the conference if their offense can find some consistency

San Francisco 49ers 2011-2012 Season Odds Preview
San Francisco went into the season in 2010 as the favorite to win the NFC West, but stumbled out of the gate to an 0-5 start and never fully recovered, finishing behind St. Louis and Seattle at 6-10.
New head coach Jim Harbaugh takes over this season, and will attempt to accomplish what Pete Carroll did last season and win the NFC West in his first season with his new team.

For the 49ers to have success this season, they’ll need Frank Gore to stay healthy and not let his contract negotiations distract him on the field. Gore is a key piece to San Francisco’s attack, but is coming off a season in which he missed five games and rushed for less than 1000 yards for the first time since 2005.
San Francisco drafted Colin Kaepernick to groom for the future at quarterback, but the starting job still belongs to Alex Smith for the time being. Offseason acquisition Braylon Edwards joins tight end Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree as Smith’s primary weapons in the passing game.
On defense, San Francisco was ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing defense thanks in large part to linebacker Patrick Willis, who racked up 128 tackles last season. The pass defense was a bit of a weakness for the 49ers last season, so they used their first round (seventh overall) pick on Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith to help with the pass rush. Losing Takeo Spikes this offseason hurts, but NaVarro Bowman looks ready to step in.
While San Francisco’s defense is far from airtight, it is probably the best in the NFC West on paper. How far San Francisco will go this season will depend on the offense. If Gore can stay healthy and Alex Smith can keep his mistakes to a minimum, San Francisco will be the team to beat in the NFC West in 2011. Coach Harbaugh might help the 49ers avoid another season implosion.
