Seattle Seahawks 2012-2013 Season Odds

The Seattle Seahawks posted a 7-9 record for the second season in a row in 2011. However, unlike 2010 a 7-9 record in 2011 wasn't good enough to claim the division title. Even without a postseason berth the Seahawks did exceed expectations, as they weren't expected to win more than six games heading into the season.

Odds to win NFC West: +400
Regular Season Win Total: 7.5 (Over -115)
Props: NFL Rushing leader odds Marshawn Lynch 15/1

Heading into the 2012 season the Seahawks have a new quarterback in hopes of improving on last year's 28th ranked offense. Seattle signed free agent Matt Flynn away from Green Bay and he'll takeover from Tarvaris Jackson. Flynn hasn't seen a lot of action in his three years in the league with only 132 pass attempts. However, he threw six touchdowns in his lone start last season which bumped him to the top of everyone's list as a free agent.

In Seattle Flynn won't have the receivers he had in Green Bay. The Seahawks No. 1 is Sidney Rice, but they're still looking for a real No. 2. The Seahawks must not have a lot of faith in young wideouts Golden Tate and Ben Obomamanu after bringing in both Braylon Edwards and Terrell Owens to compete for a spot.

The Seahawks are hoping a breakout season from Marshawn Lynch last year wasn't a fluke as it would really help balance their offense. Lynch rushed for 1204 yards and 12 touchdowns on 15 carries, but could face discipline for some off-field troubles.

The Seahawks defense was surprisingly solid last season. They were the No. 9 ranked defense (332.2 yards per game) in the league last season and No. 7 in scoring (19.7 points per game).Part of that might be from playing two of the lower scoring teams in he league twice though. Seattle focused on defense in the draft, grabbing DE Bruce Irvin and LB Bobby Wagner in the first two rounds so the defense may not fall off that much this season.

Odds to win NFC West at Bovada as of August 20
San Francisco 49ers -200
Arizona Cardinals +500
Seattle Seahawks +400
St. Louis Rams +800

Seattle Seahawks 2011-2012 Season Odds Preview

Despite having a losing record at 7-9, Seattle made the playoffs last season as the winner of the NFC West. They also shocked the sports world in knocking off the defending champion New Orleans Saints in Wild Card Week.

But none of that has done much to build expectations for the Seahawks, who are projected to finish at the bottom of the division this year. It’s true that Seattle overachieved last season, but with Pete Carroll at the helm and a division that can clearly be won by anyone, Seattle is hardly hopeless in 2011.

Odds to Win NFC West: +600
Regular Season Win Total: Over 6.5 (+160)
Props: None

For the first time in 10 years, the Seahawks will enter the season without Matt Hasselbeck as their quarterback. While he may have been injury prone and unspectacular, Hasselbeck will likely be missed considering his replacements.

Tarvaris Jackson enters the season as the starter after playing primarily as a backup for the first five years of his career with Minnesota. His backup, Charlie Whitehurst, has all of 99 career pass attempts under his belt.

Seattle acquired Jackson this offseason, and have brought in as much help as they could for him. Wideout Sidney Rice and tight end Zach Miller are both excellent options in the passing game, and guard Robert Gallery was brought in to help shore up the offensive line. Seattle used each of their first two picks in the 2011 draft on offensive linemen as well.

For all of the solid acquisitions made on offense, Seattle didn’t do much to address the defense, which finished 21st in rushing defense (118.9 yards per game) and 27th in passing defense (249.6 yards per game) last year. The hope is that last season’s unit will take a step forward after having a year to gel under Carroll’s system.

With question marks on defense and an unproven tandem at quarterback, there are plenty of reasons to write off Seattle this season. But if the Seahawks show the same tenacity they did last season and Jackson plays well, they could find their way into the mix.
